Applying to private school in Houston can be an exciting experience for families, but it also comes with a lengthy checklist of requirements.
Between school visits, parent interviews, teacher recommendations, and application deadlines, there can be quite a few details to manage.
For families applying to preschool, prekindergarten, kindergarten, or elementary school, one of those requirements may be an individually administered cognitive assessment, commonly called the WPPSI or WISC.
At Sprouting Psychology, I offer WPPSI and WISC testing for Houston families who need cognitive testing as part of the private school admissions process. My goal is to make the experience straightforward, comfortable, and convenient for both children and their parents, while maintaining the professional standards necessary for valid and reliable assessment.
What Are the WPPSI and WISC?
The Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence (WPPSI) and Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC) are standardized, individually administered measures of cognitive abilities.
The WPPSI-IV is designed for children ages 2 years, 6 months through 7 years, 7 months. It is commonly used for younger children applying to preschool, prekindergarten, and kindergarten programs.
The WISC-V is designed for children ages 6 through 16 years, 11 months and is commonly used for elementary and middle school students.
Both assessments provide information about a child's cognitive abilities, including areas such as verbal reasoning, visual-spatial skills, problem-solving, working memory, and processing speed, depending on the child's age and the assessment administered.
These assessments are not traditional academic achievement tests. They do not primarily measure how much a child has learned in school. Instead, they provide a standardized picture of different aspects of cognitive functioning.
For children ages 6 and 7, either instrument may be appropriate depending on the circumstances and the receiving school's requirements.
Do Houston Private Schools Require WPPSI or WISC Testing?
Many independent schools in the Houston area include cognitive testing as part of their admissions process, particularly for younger applicants.
However, testing requirements vary considerably by school, grade level, and application year.
Some schools require families to complete testing through a designated organization. Others may accept results from a qualified, independently practicing licensed psychologist.
Before scheduling testing, I strongly encourage parents to confirm the school's specific requirements with their admissions coordinator.
A useful question to ask is:
"Does your school accept WPPSI-IV or WISC-V results administered by an independently practicing licensed psychologist, or must testing be completed through a designated provider?"
If the school accepts independently administered testing, Sprouting Psychology may be a convenient alternative.
The Benefits of Testing With a Small Psychology Practice
As a parent navigating the admissions process, you likely have enough on your plate already. Scheduling a cognitive assessment shouldn't add unnecessary complications.
One of the advantages of working with a small private practice is the opportunity for a more personal experience from beginning to end.
At Sprouting Psychology, families work directly with me, a licensed psychologist who has administered hundreds of cognitive assessments to children, including preschoolers and elementary-aged students.
A comfortable experience for young children
For many young children, an admissions evaluation may be their first experience working individually with a psychologist.
I understand how important it is to establish rapport, help a child feel comfortable, and create an environment in which they can engage naturally with unfamiliar tasks.
Some children are eager to begin. Others need a little more time to warm up. My experience working with young children allows me to respond thoughtfully to their individual temperaments while maintaining standardized testing procedures.
My goal is for children to leave feeling that they had a positive experience, regardless of how they performed.
Convenient scheduling and a Houston location
Sprouting Psychology is located in the West University area of Houston, convenient for many families in West University Place, Bellaire, River Oaks, Southampton, Rice Village, and surrounding neighborhoods.
As a small practice, I can offer personalized scheduling assistance and work with families to identify appointments that fit their calendars.
Reports within 48 hours
Admissions deadlines can approach quickly, and waiting for testing results can be stressful.
For admissions-focused WPPSI and WISC evaluations, I provide the completed report within 48 hours of testing.
With the appropriate parent authorization, the report can be sent directly to the admitting school, provided to the family, or both, depending on the school's requirements.
Competitive pricing and clear communication
I aim to provide competitively priced admissions testing with a clear explanation of what is included.
Families know who will be working with their child, what to expect during the appointment, and when the report will be available.
For parents who would like to better understand the findings, I also offer the option of a separate consultation to discuss the results and answer questions.
What Should My Child Expect During Testing?
The testing appointment is conducted individually with your child in a quiet, comfortable setting.
Although the WPPSI and WISC are standardized assessments, many of the activities feel more like puzzles, questions, and problem-solving games than traditional school tests.
I begin by helping your child become comfortable with me and the testing environment. Throughout the appointment, I pay attention to your child's engagement, effort, and need for breaks, while following the standardized procedures required for valid interpretation.
Parents generally do not participate in the actual testing because their presence could influence performance, but I will explain the process and answer questions beforehand.
The length of the appointment varies depending on the child's age, the assessment, and the school's specific requirements.
Should I Prepare My Child for the WPPSI or WISC?
Parents naturally want their children to do their best, particularly when testing is part of an important school application.
However, I do not recommend coaching, tutoring, or practicing specific WPPSI or WISC test items.
These assessments are designed to measure how children approach unfamiliar problems. Prior exposure to test materials or closely replicated tasks can compromise the validity of the results.
The best preparation is simple: help your child get a good night's sleep, offer a normal meal or snack, and describe the appointment in relaxed, age-appropriate terms.
You might say, "You're going to meet someone who will ask you some questions and do puzzles and activities with you. Some will feel easy, and some might feel tricky. Just try your best."
There is no need to emphasize scores, admission decisions, or the importance of getting answers correct.
Can I Receive and Discuss My Child's Results?
Yes. When the school's policies permit it, I can provide a copy of the testing report directly to parents.
Some families simply need the required report submitted to their child's prospective school. Others are interested in understanding their child's cognitive strengths and areas of relative difficulty.
For those families, I offer an optional consultation to explain the results, answer questions, and discuss what the findings may mean.
It is important to recognize that an admissions-focused cognitive assessment is not the same as a comprehensive psychoeducational evaluation. If there are concerns about ADHD, dyslexia, autism, anxiety, or other learning and developmental differences, additional assessment may be appropriate.
